FAQs

What does “Niraj” mean?
Niraj translates to “illuminated” or “one who is born in water.” When owner Melissa Landers came upon the Sanskrit word, it was instant clarity and love for what would become our moniker at the studio.

Do I need to bring my own mat?
You are welcome to bring your own mat, or we have mats at the studio you can use for free – no rental fee!

How early should I arrive for class?
The studio opens 15 minutes before each class. Although a teacher may be in the studio earlier, we ask that you please not arrive earlier than 15 minutes before the class start time because the teacher is using that time to create sacred space for practice by getting the studio ready and taking a few moments to themselves to energetically prepare to lead class.

Please arrive early enough, though, to give yourself a few minutes to get settled in. The door to the studio is locked when class begins, however, you are just a couple of minutes late, the teacher is generally aware and will unlock it to let you in.

If it is your first time at Niraj, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out the first-time waiver paperwork.

Where should I park?
Parking is on-street and is often available in metered spots along Park Street, farther down Park Street in 2 hour parking spots and adjacent on Pleasant Street.

I’ve never done yoga before. Is there a class for me?
Our Yin Yoga classes and Restorative workshops are a great introduction to Yoga. Because the body moves very slowly, new yoga practitioners can begin by getting acquainted with their breath and gentle awareness of body and mind. If you’re interested in more muscular engagement and flow, Foundations of Krama Vinyasa is a perfect class for beginners.

No matter what class you are in, at Niraj we always encourage you to listen closely to your own body and honor your own individual needs in each moment; participating in what serves you, and leaving the rest.

Do your teachers use hands on assists?
We want our studio to be your sacred space. This means always respecting your boundaries and not offering hands-on assists without your consent. Many teachers develop relationships with regular practitioners and so we learn who likes to receive hands-on enhancements (we use the word enhancements rather than assists as our teachers put their hands on your to offer energetic support or guidance in the pose – not to correct you). Please always feel free to let your teacher know if you prefer not to be touched.

Do I have to sign up online?
You are welcome to sign up for class and take care of payment before class via our website (Class Schedule) or via the convenient MindBody app. Singing up in advance allows you to reserve your spot in the class should the class reach capacity. However, advanced sign up is not required. Drop-ins are always welcome on a first come first serve basis!

If you sign up for a class in advance and then decide not attend the class, please cancel your reservation in advance of the class start time via Mindbody, otherwise your drop-in fee or a class from your 10 Class Pass will be used.

Workshops, however, often sell out so we suggest that you pre-register online. (Workshop Schedule).

Please see our Membership and Rates page for purchase and cancellation policies.
